Judges Profiles:
Mike Simmons, is an author, photographer, amateur astronomer and the founder and president of Astronomers Without Borders. He is a past president of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and was the founding president of the Mount Wilson Observatory Association. He has extensive experience in international astronomy and has many contacts throughout the world.
Babak Tafreshi, TWAN founder, is a science journalist and a professional photographer who has specialized in landscape astrophotography of the type that TWAN will use. His work has been exhibited in Middle East and Europe and he has made many presentations to fellow astronomers during trips to solar eclipse sites around the world. His web site (www.dreamview.net) has also generated contacts with astrophotographers worldwide.
Ronaldo Rogério de Freitas Mourão, is a Brazilian astronomer , DSc. For the Paris University and the founder of the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences (Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins) (MAST), as well as a researcher and titular partner at the Brazilian History and Geography Institute (Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro) (IGHB). Wrote more than 80 books about Astronomy and Astronautics.
Connie Walker was trained as an astronomer but by trade is a science education specialist at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, Arizona. The best of both worlds are combined in managing astronomy education outreach programs like Arizona Project ASTRO, Family ASTRO, ASTRO-Chile, GLOBE at Night and a solar research program for teachers. In doing so, she has conducted professional development for educators, developed curricula and kits for informal and formal science education programs and convened conference sessions and workshops on hands-on science and research for students and teachers. Recently she has been asked to chair both the U.S. and the global working groups on dark skies awareness for the U.N.-approved International Year of Astronomy during 2009. Her research interests span from characterizing the magnetic fields of sunspots to characterizing star formation in the centers of galaxies at different epochs. Her hobbies include enjoying her kids, hiking, music, and “singing, dancing and eating Greek”. Like a wide-eyed child gazing in awe at the stars above, she feels she has the best job in the cosmos.
Krishnesh Mehta, Masters in Physics with an Advanced Diploma in Space Sciences and MBA. He has been active in the field of Astronomy from a very young age and then went on to do his post-masters course in Space Sciences. He is a chartered lighting engineer and teaches lighting choreography and neuro-physiology of lighting design with specialization in Reality SFX at the National Institute of Design, India, for the last 14 years. He is a visiting faculty offering varied courses ranging from creativity, innovation to entrepreneurship, services design and innovation, strategic competitive advantage through design etc. at institutes like Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), and Bangalore (IIMB), Xavier's Institute of Management, (XIMB), Bhubaneshwar, etc. As a founding member of the Astronomy Club, India, he has made several telescopes and devised innovative ways of inspiring interest in Astronomy, like ASTROFASHIONS, wherein the basic concepts of Astronomy are taught through fashion shows.
The "Earth and Sky" Astrophotography Contest has the international support of the "The World at Night" (TWAN) project and of the "Astronomers Without Borders". WE have also the participation of Dark Skies Awareness Cornerstone Project
This contest is for the best image of an astronomical object in each of five different categories:
> Dark Skies (astrophotography that illustrate and contrast light polluted areas vs dark sky areas.)
> Deep-Sky
> Lunar, Planetary and Solar
> Wide Field (Wide field or Piggy-back photos of star fields or celestial groupings in the night sky.)
> Special Events (comets, meteors, eclipses, transits, planetary conjunctions)
We are not receiving new submissions.
There will be one prize awarded for each category.
The best images (winners) will appear on TWAN website in a special news release page about the competition and will be publish in well received TWAN Guest Gallery.
